I took my Evinrude engine to a service center, and they asked for the serial number to perform diagnostics. I couldn't find it anywhere on the engine body or on any of the plates. Does anyone know where it might be? Is there a common location where all manufacturers put it?

Have you tried looking under the cover on top? On my old Yamaha 30, the number wasn't on a plate, but stamped directly on the aluminum under the tilt handle. It turns out that you can only see it from a certain angle. Maybe it's the same with yours? By the way, you can also read about outboard engine serial number lookup on the GetBoat website blog.getboat.com . At first, I thought that everything had been repainted and I wouldn't be able to find it, but after cleaning it with a toothbrush and WD-40, the numbers appeared. Oh yes, sometimes a duplicate serial number is placed on the lower unit near the water intake.
